The Kumon Newry Study Centre opened in 2015 and offers individualised study programmes in maths and English to students of all ages and abilities. Currently our students range in age from five to 16 years old, and many attend primary and secondary schools within the local area.
The Newry Study Centre operates at Altnaveigh House (directly opposite Tesco) in the front classroom. There is a designated waiting area where parents may stay while their child is in class. Each week students are allocated a time slot of 30 to 45 minutes, per subject studied, wherein they complete their classwork and have their homework recorded.
The centre has an area where the students are able to test their mental maths using number board games, books from the Kumon Recommended Reading List are also available for students' use.
Each student leaves knowing they have moved along in their studies, and with the confidence that they will be able to complete their daily Kumon homework.
Parents are given regular updates on how their children are progressing by email, telephone and scheduled meetings. They also see the delight of the children when they move up a level and take home a certificate and prize. Above all, students gain a sense of achievement, which boosts their confidence in their school life and beyond.
Many students at the centre are working above Kumon International Standard, meaning they are studying advanced work for their age. In reaching this milestone, the students have developed good focus and study discipline that is being noticed by parents and teachers. Most importantly, the students themselves have matured, know how to settle to a task and are happy in their studies.
Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.
The unique Kumon Maths and English programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.
