About this centre

KUMON CONNECT available Online Class available In-Centre Class available

The centre operates from Pollokshields Community Centre and provides Maths and English Programmes for students of all ages and abilities.

This centre was established in 2008 and has grown from strength to strength. Currently, it has over 120 students from three to 14 years old. The centre has a study hall, entry to which is restricted to students, the Instructor and classroom assistants. This provides a quiet environment for children to focus and learn.

There is a specially designated area for pre-schoolers who require one-to-one attention. There is a separate parent waiting area managed by an assistant, which offers a safe and warm environment for parents, guardians and siblings, while students are attending their class. Here, parents can leave messages or feedback for the Instructor.

Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider. Rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners, who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work. Please contact us for more information or to arrange to visit the centre.

About the Instructor

Shweta Chadha - Pollokshields

Hello, I am Shweta Gandhi Chadha, the Instructor at the Kumon Pollokshields Study Centre. William Wilberforce once said: “Iron is useful, though it does not sparkle like the diamond. Gold has not the fragrance of a flower. So different persons have various modes of excellence, and we must have an eye to all.”

Ever since I took over the centre in April 2014, my endeavour has been to put this belief into practice. Every child who joins my centre brings his or her own strengths and unique qualities that deserve individualised attention and plan to help him/her progress through the Kumon stages.

I have two master’s degrees, one in Child Development and another in Social Work, specialising in Family and Child Welfare. I am very proud to have been awarded the Kumon Elite Instructor Status in 2016, a recognition for excellent performance in retention of students, high growth in student numbers and nurturing students to advanced levels.

On each class day, I get a buzz from witnessing the students achieve their goals at their own pace. Equally, each class poses challenges and not a day goes by without me thinking about how to improve my skills as an Instructor.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
