The centre which was established in 2013. The venue is easily accessible from both Coventry Road and Hob Moor Road.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. We have been privileged in that time to help develop students of all ages and abilities using the Kumon Method of Learning.

Students currently range in age from three to 16 years old, and are supported in their learning by a well-trained team of up to nine assistants and the Instructor. The class is a focused learning environment with an emphasis on the development of each students’ study skills, independence and resilience in order to take full advantage of their learning at all stages of their learning journey.

About the Instructor

My name is Saika Ismail and I am the Instructor at the Small Heath Study Centre. I was a science teacher and subsequently Head of Science in the secondary sector with experience of teaching to A level standard and an examiner for 20 years. Having achieved a master’s degree in Education, my passion for teaching grew.

I was so impressed by the structure of the Kumon programmes that I decided to enrol my son. I saw him grow in confidence with each month of study and become more motivated and focused to learn independently. As he matured, he became less reliant on his class teachers and saw himself as a successful student. His achievements motivated me to become a Kumon Instructor.

I watch students develop their stamina, speed and accuracy in the context of the Kumon Maths and English Programmes. The light bulb moments where a student is able to resolve a difficult question or when the students report back “I think that’s so easy now” is a big achievement.

I feel so fortunate to be able to offer Kumon to so many local students and watch them develop and grow through the programmes, just as my own child has done - I actually can’t think of anything that is more satisfying professionally.

How long does study take?

The time taken to complete a day's work may be around 30 minutes per subject. The study time is down to each individual and their current study level. Class times displayed may include a combination of in-centre and online class sessions. Please contact your Instructor for further details.

My children started Kumon in a small heath centre four years ago and continuously attended. The teaching style of Saika is exceptionally brilliant, her groups are small and this allow her to focus on the childens need and her staff are patient with the kids. My kids look forward to going to the centre, Because of Saika my daughter performed really well in her 11plus exam and achieved a 238 score. I have already recommended a few people to Kumon and will highly recommend them to everyone 😁.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
