The centre is situated in the heart of South Woodford, next to the library and the health centre. It was opened in 1997 and is an important part of the local community. The centre prides itself on making children feel at ease in a friendly atmosphere. The dedicated team of assistants come from a wide range of backgrounds; the adult assistants all work in local schools and most of the younger assistants are former Kumon students who use their experience to help younger children with their work. Over half of the students are studying work which is above their school level.
At the South Woodford Study Centre, there are students of all ages and abilities, the youngest currently being four years old and the eldest 18. Staff at the centre do their best to bring out the potential in every student and to help them achieve their parents' aims, whether it is to help a child who is struggling or one who is working towards an important exam.
The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. The students come from all over the area and from every type of school. Many of the new students come by recommendation or word of mouth.
Through daily study, both at the study centre and independently at home, Kumon goes further than traditional methods of tuition by ensuring students maintain a level of development every day.
