Welcome to the Southampton, Shirley Study Centre.

The unique Kumon maths and English Study Programmes pursue the potential of each child, developing their ability and nurturing their independence.

At the centre, the children are observed and instructed in their completion of their daily work. Children can verbally practice their times tables and we also encourage all children to read widely. We have a selection of books that they can choose from while they are waiting for their work to be marked or to be collected by their parent.

We operate a time slotting system for parents to regularly bring their children. This enables us to provide a calm and organised environment at the centre where effective learning can occur.

Children attend for up to 30 minutes per subject up to twice a week. Using a positive and friendly approach, we foster an expectation that all children can achieve their potential when encouraged and supported appropriately.

Kumon’s long-term focus provides children with the self-assurance to take their learning into their own hands, increasing their motivation to succeed.

Did you know, you can now study Kumon using digital worksheets? This study centre is proud to offer KUMON CONNECT. Click here to find out more.

About the Instructor

Hello, my name is Ivy and I am the Instructor at Southampton, Shirley Study Centre.

My love for learning was nurtured from a young age by my parents who taught me to read which gave me the freedom to learn things for myself. They instilled in me the values of hard work, effort and perseverance and these values alongside the support, guidance and encouragement from my family and mentors helped me attain my PhD in Physiotherapy from King’s College, London.

Teaching BSc and MSc students at King’s College and Brunel University has also further consolidated my experience of the importance of self-learning skills in helping each individual to reach their maximum potential. I have always aimed to help people help themselves to achieve their potential.

As a Kumon instructor I can continue this approach because the pursuit of each individual’s potential by developing independent self-learning skills is embodied in the Kumon Method of Learning. Having seen friends’ children study Kumon from reception to teenage years become confident, kind, successful and responsible young people, I know this is what I hope to foster in my own child and underlies what I want for all the children who I instruct at Southampton, Shirley.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
