The centre has been serving the local community since 1999. Children of all ages and abilities are welcome, and there are currently students aged between three and 16 years old, who attend the local primary or secondary/grammar schools. Some of the students have been studying at the centre for more than three years.
The centre runs from The Phoenix Leisure Centre.
Children arrive at allocated time slots and usually stay for between 30 minutes and an hour.
Within the centre students are encouraged to learn independently, as per the Kumon ethos.
As well as the Instructor, there is a support staff of one receptionist and eight assistants who have been trained in the Kumon Method of Learning to support the development of the children participating on both the maths and English programmes and this includes providing activities such as listening to children read or reciting their multiplication tables.
Early learners and newcomers are provided with the necessary one-to-one support to develop the required study skills and progress to independent study.
Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.
The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.
