The centre has been open since 1997 and was taken over by current Instructor Lesley Collier in 1999. It is based at Goldwater Lodge in Goldsworth Park. There is a large car-park nearby, a children's playground and a beautiful lakeside walk.
Students at the centre currently range from pre-school through to A-level and have a range of needs. The centre welcomes students of all ages and abilities.
Whilst Lesley, the Instructor, oversees the running of the centre, there is a team of ten to twelve assistants that are knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Most have studied with Kumon themselves or supported their children to study. From students to graduates, they are committed and able and have a wealth of experience between them. Lesley ensures they receive regular training to help in their roles in class. The setting and analysis of student’s work at the centre is undertaken by Lesley herself.
The centre has specially allocated tables for newly enrolled students and early learners, to facilitate closer observation in the early days of study. It allows for more one-to-one care in helping to develop pencil skills, correct posture and concentration.
Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.
The unique Kumon maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.
