The Kumon Yeovil study centre opened in May 2004. We had been Kumon parents for a year before opening so were well-acquainted with the challenges and rewards of incorporating daily study into busy lives. Our centre is thriving, and we enjoy sharing this unique learning experience with the many vibrant individuals who attend the centre twice a week. We open our centre 52 weeks of the year, because we believe that this is the best way to support our students. It also means that students may join the programmes at any time.
Although many of our students live in Yeovil and attend a variety of local schools, others come from the outlying villages, and some even travel regularly from much greater distances. Their parents believe that the benefits of doing Kumon greatly outweigh any inconvenience, and it soon establishes itself into a regular routine. Our Kumon parents are crucial in supporting the students on both a day-to-day and long term basis, and are much appreciated by the Kumon Yeovil team.
Currently around a third of our students are 'dual subject' and these students allow a little extra time to complete both maths and English worksheets in each class. Some of these students enrol on both subjects straight away. Others see how one subject fits into their daily routine before adding the second subject later. Quite often, it is the student who requests to do the second subject.
Without exception, the reason our students join Kumon Yeovil is because their parents want them to be confident and happy. Typically our parents will say that they don't mind how clever their child is, they just want to know that they are performing to the best of their ability. Mainly our parents want their children to be able to have choices in their later life; to be able to choose their career path knowing that their maths and English skills are of an appropriate standard. Some of our students may initially struggle with certain elements of maths or English, and may think that they are not very good at these subjects.
At Kumon Yeovil, we firmly believe that by applying Kumon's 'Easy Starting Point' we can give these children the practice they need to improve their skills and develop much greater self-confidence. Other students who study with us may be highly able at their chosen subject at the point of enrolling, or may become highly able after they have been with us a while. We ensure that the skills they have are equally strong across all areas of the programme before they can move on to study at advanced levels. Students who have been with us a number of years typically become highly self-motivated and keen to set and meet their own targets.
We are a friendly centre, with an enthusiastic team of assistants. We cherish the range of personalities of our students, from the shy, self-effacing individuals to the charming, chatterbox characters to the disorganised dreamers. We can help each student to improve their skills, without losing the delightful quirks that make them unique.
