The Kumon York, Fulford Study Centre was established in 2002 and runs from the Fulford Social Hall. The study centre is easily accessible by foot, car, and public transport and there is plenty of on-street car parking locally. In the foyer of the building, seating is provided where parents and siblings can wait while students are studying.
The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. Kumon’s study programmes are suitable for all ages and students at the centre currently range from four to 19 years old.
Jenny is supported by six class assistants, three of which are previous Kumon students, who support with the marking and recording of students work, and listening to students read.
A dedicated area for newly enrolled students and early learners ensure students work closely with a class assistant familiarising them with class routine, and supporting them with their worksheet study, before they move to the independent area of class.
Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.
There is a selection of books from the Kumon Recommended Reading List in the centre. These books complement students’ daily worksheet study and are there to encourage a love and passion for reading.
The class is a calm, focused environment where independence and concentration is encouraged amongst all students including the very young ones.
