Wednesday class is running from Swing Gate Infant School & Nursery, Swing Gate Lane, Berkhamsted, HP4 2LJ.

The Kumon Berkhamsted Study Centre has been helping children develop strong foundations in maths and English for over 20 years. Our aim at the Berkhamsted study centre is to help every student achieve their personal target, whether they want to catch up with schoolwork or want to further develop their skills.

The centre is located upstairs in the historic Old Town Hall in the centre of Berkhamsted High Street. There is a calm and supportive atmosphere where students can work safely and thrive. Children start by doing work they are comfortable with in order to build their confidence. They then progress through the topics at their own pace. They are encouraged to work independently but there is always help at hand if needed.

Children typically attend the centre every week for approximately half an hour per subject. Time slots are allocated so student numbers are controlled. Changing between days and times can be arranged to suit families and their other commitments.

Did you know, you can now study Kumon using digital worksheets? This study centre is proud to offer KUMON CONNECT. Click here to find out more.

About the Instructor

My name is Mary Phung-Wells and I will be the Kumon instructor for the Berkhamsted study centre from 1st June 2022.  I first opened a Kumon centre in August 2017 and I'm very proud to say that within 5 years and with a pandemic to endure, that centre successfully grew from just 2 students to over 80, studying 120+ subjects between them.  When Kumon Berkhamsted became available, it was an opportunity too good to miss.  I live very close by in Boxmoor and spend a lot of time in Berkhamsted, my children have clubs here, my NCT group was here and I know the community well.

My background is in Physics teaching. After completing an engineering degree and my teaching qualification, I became a science teacher and head of Physics at Hemel Hempstead school for 12 years. I decided to pursue something more flexible when my children came along. I looked into various tutoring options, and the Kumon method echoed with my own values and I could see that if only more children in my science classroom had had something like Kumon, they would not encounter some of the difficulties they had in their studies.  I wanted to offer something I truly believed would help.

My children both started Kumon when they reached Year 1 and I see the benefit of their study first hand. It’s truly incredible what Kumon can do. With 9 months to spare, my eldest started preparing for the 11+ exams and was able to complete tasks independently, confidently and competently.  I 100% believe that his Kumon study enabled this.   By Year 2, my youngest was able to do column subtraction faster than most adults I knew and his time management skills and previously weak handwriting ability came on leaps and bounds.

As a Kumon parent and instructor, I strive to ensure the right level of progress is being achieved in a manner that is manageable and effective for busy families. When we get the balance right, there is no more powerful way for young children to learn and advance beyond school level.  Kumon students develop the confidence to attempt new things by themselves, they persevere and aren't afraid of working hard to see results.

I love my job. I love what Kumon can do for learners. I'm excited to be here to deliver the Kumon programme to more families in my local area and witness Kumon Berkhamsted go from strength to strength.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
