About this centre

The centre provides maths and English programmes for students of all ages and abilities and has been serving the local community since 2000.

Most of our students attend schools within the area and live in the local community and the current age range of students at the centre is four to 16 years old. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.

There are eight assistants who help the Instructor with classroom work, providing encouragement and support to enable your child to settle in quickly and make optimum progress. The aim is to maintain professional standards through a centre which runs smoothly, is sensitive to students' needs and has good student and parent relationships.

Hello, I am Paul Hopkins and I’m the Instructor at the Altrincham Study Centre.

I have been immersed in education for 28 years and I am a fully qualified teacher. The experience I have had in education supports me extremely well in my role. Furthermore, being a Kumon parent for ten years motivated me to become a Kumon Instructor.

My two children have both undertaken the Kumon Maths Programme. They have benefited tremendously from the programme and progressed from finding maths difficult to being very comfortable with the subject. The Kumon Maths Programme allowed both of them to work at a level above the school curriculum and, without doubt, increase their confidence and ability.

What gives me great pleasure is holding progress review meetings with parents and looking in detail at the progress their child has made over several months. What I have also found extremely satisfying is when students come to class and tell me about the progress and success they have made at school. Examples of comments often made include: ‘I’m now in the top maths set’; ‘I finished my test first and got the highest mark’; and one of my favourites: ‘I won the schools maths competition’. Seeing their increased confidence and heightened sense of self-belief is priceless.
