About this centre

Welcome to the Kumon Barnet Study Centre, which has been open since 1994. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. Students at the centre currently range in age from three to 18 years old and are of all abilities.

Kumon provides long-term benefits to give students the best chance to succeed both at school and in life. Many of the students who have studied Kumon at Barnet have used the skills they have gained to prepare them for entrance to local schools, achieve good GCSE and A level results and gain entrance to the university of their choice. Other benefits include improvements in confidence, mental agility and stamina.

Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.

Kumon students can drop in to class at any time during opening hours. Whilst in class they will be supported by an experienced team of assistants, all of whom have first-hand experience of the Kumon programmes.

My name is Lynn Fernandes and I have been the Kumon Instructor at the Barnet Study Centre since 1996. Each of my four children studied Kumon, so I know first-hand the benefits of long-term Kumon study. Having previously been an accountant, I opted to become a Kumon Instructor after my decision to change careers following my full-time return to work after the birth of my fourth child.

It is very exciting to be able to help students who are struggling with their school lessons, as well as challenging other students who are excelling in maths and English. I love the opportunity to be involved with the education of individual students over many years and see them develop their skills from primary school to GCSE level and beyond.

In September 2016, I was presented with a certificate by Kumon Europe & Africa to mark my 20 years as an Instructor. I used this opportunity to say: "Thank you so much to all my students, both past and present who have helped to make my time as a Kumon Instructor so rewarding. Thank you also to all my assistants who have helped make the Barnet Study Centre so successful in helping children achieve their potential in both maths and English."
