About this centre

The study centre has been open since 1999, offering maths and English programmes for children of all ages and abilities.

Students are currently aged from three to 17 years old, with a very wide range of abilities. Students are able drop in to class at a time to suit themselves during the sessions and are typically present for 30-60 minutes.

There is a special area dedicated to early learners, helping them to discover the joy of learning.

The Charlton Study Centre goes by the vision statement of: 'We aim to provide a nurturing environment where all children can develop the skills they need to realise their full potential.'

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

My name is Julie Mason and I always describe myself as a 'numbers person who loves to read.'

After gaining my maths degree, I trained as a primary school teacher and went on to teach maths at secondary school level for four years. I then worked part-time from home for ten years, while my main role was being a mum to my three children. Once my youngest child had started full-time school, I was ready for a fresh challenge.

I was delighted to discover that Kumon was of equal benefit to children of all ages and abilities. I realised that children still need to build their basic skills and mental agility, but they also need to be challenged and to develop their self-learning skills and independence as they study work ahead of their school grade level.

Every day I am impressed by the power and flexibility of the Kumon programmes. It is very exciting to be able to help students who are struggling with their school lessons, as well as challenging other students who are excelling in maths and English.

I love the opportunity to be involved with the education of individual students over many years, often seeing them develop their skills from primary school to GCSE level and beyond.
