Chesham Study Centre

About this centre

The centre was established in 2005 and is based at Chesham Grammar School, in the language block. Many of the students who attend the study centre attend schools in Chesham and live in and around the Chesham area. However, some students travel to the centre from surrounding areas.

The current ages of children attending the centre ranges from five to 18 years old, although the centre welcomes all ages and abilities. There are currently six or seven assistants working at the centre on both days.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.

My name is Min Carter and I am the Instructor at the Chesham Study Centre.

I became a Kumon Instructor because I have a love for maths and I saw how solid the programme was when both my daughters were enrolled in a local Kumon centre. Over the years, I saw how Kumon gave my daughters a fantastic foundation in maths and English and has also given them the skills to concentrate, work independently and tackle new work.

The most rewarding part of my role is working with the children, especially when they have been struggling with some work and then they get that 'light-bulb' moment when things begin to fall into place.

Being a Kumon parent has enabled me to see both sides of the coin. I think at the beginning one of the most important skills to work on is daily practice, both from the student and the parent; that is the student doing the work and the parent marking their work everyday. Also, knowing that we all learn differently, so understanding how your child works and that there will be times when they learn quickly and times when they need to consolidate what they have learnt.
