About this centre

Welcome to the Dartford Study Centre, opened in 1999.

The vast majority of students at the centre attend local schools and currently vary in age from five to 15 years old, highlighting the ability of Kumon to benefit students of all ages and abilities.

The centre is staffed with the Instructor, Centre Manager, receptionist and ten assistants. The Centre Manager is a former Kumon Instructor and has 18 years experience.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.

The centre is also close to Dartford Library and students are encouraged to sign up and visit the library regularly.

Hello, my name is Duncan Harper and I am the Instructor at the Kumon Dartford Study Centre.

During my working career I became involved with Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership. The partnership puts businesses in touch with local schools to help support reading, maths and IT skills at the schools. I became a regular volunteer and school governor at Smithy Street School in Tower Hamlets, and thoroughly enjoyed working with the children. As a result, I decided to follow a career in education after taking early retirement and became a Kumon Instructor, taking over the Dartford centre in 2010.

Being a Kumon parent, I witnessed both my sons’ study skills, independence and confidence put into use in their further studies.

The most rewarding element of Kumon is undoubtedly working with the students. I am constantly surprised by the ability of students to study advanced topics and there is always a great feeling of satisfaction when a student has a “light bulb moment” of understanding or produces a fast and accurate piece of work.
