Established in 2001, the centre has a long track record of supporting and helping children to develop skills in preparation for taking exams, and many at the centre have gone on to gain places at Colyton and Torquay Grammar Schools, or to attain top grades in their GCSE and A Level exams.
Kumon is suitable for all ages and abilities and students at the centre currently range from four years and upwards, including some being taught at home. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. The centre is also experienced in providing effective help for children who may be struggling at school or who may have learning difficulties.
Through daily study, both at the study centre and independently at home, Kumon goes further than traditional methods of tuition by ensuring students maintain a level of development every day.
The classes are held on the upper floor of the grand Regency Grade II listed Dawlish Manor House.
Besides achieving excellent academic results, the Dawlish Study Centre has gained a highly esteemed reputation for its orderly, friendly and informal atmosphere, which both children and parents enjoy.
Joining the Kumon organisation was a natural progression for me, having previously been a director of a consultancy specialising in education and prior to that, head of Training and Development for Price Waterhouse Management Consultancy Services (covering UK, Europe and Africa) for a period of ten years. During this time, I designed and delivered many different educational programmes at home and overseas on behalf of government and private sector organisations. I have also taught in several primary schools in the Dawlish locality as a peripatetic teacher.
I find helping children to reach their goals and potential through means of the Kumon programmes and hearing about their achievements immensely rewarding.
It is especially rewarding when I am able to help and encourage those children to make sound progress for whom maths and English do not come naturally or easily, and to see the pride and delight this brings their parents.
