About this centre

The Dunfermline Study Centre opened in 2008 and has grown in strength along with the students who have come through its doors. Many of the students at the Dunfermline Study Centre have begun the Kumon programmes on the recommendation of other Kumon students and their families.

Situated on the edge of Dunfermline town centre, it is easy to find. Students attend class for approximately half an hour per subject where they complete their work, amend any corrections they may have, collect their work for the coming week and speak with the Instructor before they leave.

At the Dunfermline Study Centre, the Instructor is supported by eight excellent assistants who support students by marking and recording their work, working with students on their reading and oral maths, and supporting early learners. In class, students also have the opportunity to read a variety of books from Kumon’s comprehensive Recommended Reading List.

The current ages of students at the centre range from four to 14 years. The Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes are suitable for students of all ages and abilities as the Instructor tailors the programme to suit each individual child and ensures students have a good foundation before embarking on advanced study.

My interest in children and education started while studying psychology at the University of Dundee. I had a particular interest in learning and development and was excited about how sensitive and resilient children are in their learning. Following this, I worked with young adults with learning disabilities which I thoroughly enjoyed. At the same time, I also began working as a classroom assistant in the Dunfermline Study Centre, shortly after it opened in 2008.

In 2014 the opportunity arose to take over the Dunfermline Study Centre, and after completing Instructor Training, I became a Kumon Instructor that August. I was very pleased to be able to keep the centre open and found that I really enjoyed the challenges and opportunities that posed.

As a Kumon Instructor, I enjoy being able to work with students individually, getting to know them and encouraging them in their work. I aim for my students, of all abilities, to progress through to and above their school level, by developing a strong foundation and building on it. This results in gaining confidence and even an advantage at school. I love seeing a student completing work which they previously would have found difficult, or would not have believed they were able to do.
