About this centre

The centre has been open since 1995, offering both maths and English study programmes. It is now a thriving and important part of the local community.

At the centre, there are students of all abilities and ages, ranging presently from four to 14 years old.

Students generally attend once a week, and each class visit lasts approximately 30 minutes per subject. During this time, parents are welcome to wait downstairs in the library, where tea and coffee are available.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. The team of six assistants and the Instructor are on hand in class to offer support and encouragement. The Instructor sees each student while they attend class on a one-to-one basis to give feedback and offer help and discuss goals and progress.

Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.

My name is Deirdre Bracks and I became the Instructor at the Edinburgh, Portobello Study Centre in November 2011.

I have experience of working with children in the school environment and also in adult training and know that the lifelong study skills developed at Kumon, along with the solid foundations in English and/or maths will prove invaluable in later life.

From raising my own children, I know the challenges you may face. My role as a Kumon Instructor is to guide and motivate your child, encouraging them to become independent learners. Allowing students to learn from their mistakes is a vital part of the learning process and pointing them in the right direction to obtain the correct answers by themselves is a very satisfying aspect of my job. Seeing them grow in confidence and being prepared to “have a go” by themselves is what I strive for.

I continually set short and long-term goals with each student so that together we can all share and enjoy their progress.

Since becoming an Instructor, I have witnessed many children’s ability grow and they become confident, positive students who understand that like everything else in life; practice makes perfect.

I consider myself very fortunate to have such a fulfilling career.
