The centre has been in Hale Barns since 2013 and is a thriving part of the local community.
Kumon is suitable for all abilities and ages, with students at the centre currently ranging from two to 14 years old. Some students are long-term advocates of the Kumon Method and some have just recently started at the centre, with new students starting regularly. Younger students benefit from the dedicated early learner area where one-to-one support is available if needed. Gradually, as they become more independent, these students will work on their own. Students spend approximately 35-40 minutes in the centre, up to twice a week.
Through daily study, both at the study centre and independently at home, Kumon goes further than traditional methods of tuition by ensuring students maintain a level of development every day, and develop their confidence.
The five members of staff whole-heartedly support each child’s individual needs and specialise in different roles including ‘mental maths’, supporting early learners, or marking and recording classwork. All staff enhance their own knowledge of the Kumon programmes and further improve the quality of support at the centre by completing daily worksheet study.
All students have access to a lending pool of books, many of which are on the Kumon Recommended Reading List. Children can borrow these books for free and are actively encouraged to try new genres, authors or styles of book.
Hello, I am Hazel Woodward and I am the Instructor at the Hale Barns Study Centre. I took over the centre in June 2013, and since then have relished the challenges I have faced when taking over an existing centre.
During my career, I had many roles within the education environment which allowed me to gain first-hand experience of the statutory responsibilities of school. I also developed my deep-rooted passion for children’s education.
I am a committed Kumon parent, my daughter has been studying maths and English with me at my centre; the development I have witnessed over the space of a few months is quite incredible!
I have found that the most important tool in enabling students to achieve their best is to provide relevant and genuine praise for good work. I strongly believe that they begin to rely more and more on their self-belief and this allows them to grow and learn independently. It is very impressive to see how confident they become and how this is reflected in every area of their work, both at school and outside.
