About this centre

  Two-week Free Trial available

The centre was established in February 2006.

The majority of students at the centre attend local schools and currently range from three to 16 years old, although the Kumon programme caters for children of all ages and abilities. Students attend class on a drop-in basis, arriving at a given time slot. Each class visit lasts approximately 20-30 minutes per subject.

Along with the Instructor, the centre has a receptionist and eight trained assistants to support and provide guidance where necessary. This includes English students reading to an assistant before completing their class work, although it is beneficial to both maths and English students to read on a regular basis.

The Instructor is available to give guidance to parents and students regarding their work, at class or via telephone at other times if required. The centre holds an annual award ceremony where the efforts and achievements of all students are formally recognised.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands.

Hi, my name is Lola Ottun and I have been the Instructor at the Kumon Lower Sydenham Study Centre since February 2006. I strongly believe that all children should have the opportunity to excel and fulfil their full potential.

Over the last 20 years I have combined my interest in the education system with raising my three children and training to become a qualified secondary maths teacher.

Over the last ten years of running my centre I have seen the positive impact the Kumon programmes have had on the large number of students I have nurtured over the years.

With the support of my experienced assistants, I am afforded the opportunity to get to know each student and their parents by working with them to help each child to develop, not only in maths and English but also their study skills, concentration, motivation and confidence.

Seeing students succeed is the most rewarding part of my job, especially students who start at the centre with low confidence who go on to become independent, mature learners. I enjoy working with children of all ages and abilities and particularly like the fact that I can set each student's work individually so they can work at a pace that is best for them.

I would be delighted to welcome you to my centre.
