About this centre

The Kumon Marton Study Centre opened in 2007 and is run by Jayne Moffat. The centre has students from throughout the Teesside area including Marton, Nunthorpe, Coulby Newham, Acklam, Linthorpe, Guisborough, Great Ayton, Stokesley, Normanby and Ingleby Barwick.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

Many students study both the programmes though some concentrate on one. The centre is based in Marton Community Centre, in light and airy rooms with appropriately sized furniture for both older students working independently and early learners who have extra support.

The Instructor is supported by a team of classroom assistants who undertake many duties to support students’ development. The team includes former Kumon students, qualified teaching assistants and a university student.

There is a dedicated assistant who works closely with early learners providing guidance and encouragement. All students are observed closely and given support as and when required.

My name is Jayne Moffat, and I am the Instructor at the Middlesbrough, Marton study centre.

After working as a civil engineer for over 20 years, I decided to rethink my career path and took a year out. I was planning to retrain as a secondary school maths teacher, as I’d studied maths to degree level, however, during this year I started my daughter on the Kumon Maths Programme, following a recommendation from a friend of mine.

Seeing the fantastic progress she made, studying GCSE work in Year 6 and an increase in her confidence, I decided I wanted to become a Kumon Instructor.

I opened my centre in May 2007 and have never looked back. I have instructed hundreds of children in the Kumon Method, many of them reaching high levels of the programme and working on material well beyond their school age.

I find my role as an Instructor extremely rewarding, and like nothing better than when students come in and tell me how their hard work and commitment at Kumon has helped them progress, improve and achieve at school. My favourite comment made by students is: ‘I’m the times tables whizz in my class!’
