The centre has been open since 2008 and provides maths and English programmes for students of all ages and abilities. Many of the students at the centre attend schools within the area and live in the local community.
At present, students at the centre range from three to 14 years of age. Some students study the maths programmes and others the English programme, but a growing number of students have opted to study both subjects.
There is a number of assistants at the centre that support the Instructor in helping student's development.
The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands.
The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.
For further information, please do not hesitate to contact the Instructor.
My name is Clare Banbridge and I am the Instructor at the Newcastle-under-Lyme Study Centre. I have numerous years of teaching experience in primary schools, I have been lucky enough to teach all age groups from reception to Year 6.
It was while on a sailing holiday in 2007 in Greece that I met a 'Kumon' family. Every morning, the English worksheets were completed before excursions began. I had not heard of Kumon before, but the idea of a structured, step-by-step, 'little and often' approach made perfect sense to me.
Since joining Kumon in 2008, it has surpassed my expectations of how much difference a strong base in calculation and reading comprehension can make to an individual. Not only has it helped my students achieve higher grades in maths and English but the learning skills and confidence they have gained has helped to increase their level of achievement in all subjects
I always try to encourage more independent study by encouraging students to read widely and to have a go at our writing and art competitions. The ability to learn and act independently really helps when students need to tackle longer school homework tasks such as essays, topic work or test revision.
