The centre has been part of the local community since it opened in 1996.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

The majority of students at the centre attend local schools and range from pre-schoolers to those in secondary school studying A levels. Newly enrolled students are also closely monitored to ensure that they too acquire the study skills and self-assurance to go on to become confident, independent learners.

Similar to other tuition providers the Kumon programmes focus on essential academic skills, but we go one step further by developing a child’s independent study skills, needed for school, university, employment and other aspects of adult life.

As well as the Instructor, the centre has a receptionist and 12 assistants who have been trained to support the development of the children participating on both the maths and English programmes and this includes providing activities such as listening to children read or reciting their multiplication tables.

There is a monthly newsletter and parents are kept regularly informed of their child’s progress.

My name is Heather Hurd-Sinclair and I have been a Kumon Instructor since 2013.

Before becoming a Kumon Instructor, I spent a number of years teaching English to speakers of other languages. I feel that my studies, work experience and the ongoing training provided by Kumon will equip me with the skills necessary to fulfil my aim of creating a centre of excellence. One that students, parents and staff will be proud to attend.

I have a passionate belief that education is a means to improving and changing lives which is what attracted me to the Kumon Method of Learning with its emphasis on developing confident, independent learners.

I have found it very rewarding to witness the pleasure that children find in their own achievements, especially when it is something they previously thought they were not able to do. Children will come into the centre happy that they were able to do something in school that day because they had already done it with Kumon.

I have always encouraged my own children to pursue educational opportunities and to see learning as a lifelong activity to be enjoyed. I am proud to be involved with providing children with the opportunity to develop valuable lifelong skills.
