About this centre

The centre opened in 2005 in the heart of Ponteland and currently has over 200 students studying the maths and/or English study programmes.

Students come mainly from the Ponteland and Darras Hall areas but there are some who come from further afield to attend the Saturday class. The current age range of students at the centre is from four to 18 years old and many attend local schools, although Kumon caters for children of all ages and abilities.

There are a team of assistants at the centre, many of whom have studied or are studying the Kumon programmes themselves.

Our intensive 'study skills area' allows new students to settle in well to Kumon, as well as learn essential study skills for life. Students are moved to the independent area of the room when they have gained sufficient skills to work independently through challenging worksheets. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

Similar to other tuition providers the Kumon programmes focus on essential academic skills, but we go one step further by developing a child’s independent study skills, needed for school, university, employment and all other aspects of adult life.

My name is Liz Burrin and I am the Instructor at the Kumon Ponteland Study Centre. Having trained and worked in Newcastle as a physiotherapist and later as a medical representative for a pharmaceutical company, I became a full time mother when my eldest daughter was born.

I discovered the Kumon Method and we enrolled my daughter on the Kumon Maths Programme. We never looked back and subsequently, in the years that followed, enrolled our four younger children as soon as they entered reception at school.

Having moved to Ponteland, the opportunity arose for me to open the Kumon Ponteland Study Centre and this seemed the next natural step for me to take. I have instructed hundreds of children in the Kumon Method, many of them reaching the very high levels of the programme and some going on to complete the programme to A-level standard equivalent work, often working on material that is well beyond their school age.

With my own five children having studied both the maths and English programmes, nobody has better experience of telling you the commitment we ask at Kumon, but it is so worthwhile and rewarding when you see what your child can achieve.
