About this centre

The centre is conveniently located at St James Church Hall and provides the Kumon Maths and English Programmes to students of all ages and abilities.

Students attend the study centre once or twice a week and are in class for around 20-30 minutes for each subject studied. As well as the Instructor, there are trained class assistants at the centre to support students with their learning. There is also an activity area where students may complete maths and English challenges whilst their work is being marked.

Staff at the Portsmouth, Southsea Study Centre ensure the centre has a caring and encouraging atmosphere, where everyone feels valued and supported.

Through daily study, both at the study centre and independently at home, Kumon goes further than traditional methods of tuition by ensuring students maintain a level of development every day.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

My name is Imogen Dobbs and I am the Instructor at the Portsmouth, Southsea Study Centre. I have worked as a primary teacher for over 12 years. Throughout my career, I have taught in various schools in London and the South Coast, as well as prominent international schools in Vietnam, Taiwan and Egypt. Seeing children develop, progress and grow in confidence has given me such a great sense of job satisfaction.

I learnt about Kumon when I was teaching in Vietnam. A lot of the children I taught there were very confident in their calculation skills and most were able to solve maths problems far beyond their expected year group level. Upon investigation, I found many of them were studying the Kumon Maths Programme.

What I like about Kumon is that it gives children plenty of opportunity to effectively practise and embed their learning, before moving on to harder work. Kumon enables children to work at their own pace, independently and at their own level, which in turn develops their concentration skills and confidence.

Students get the satisfaction of completing something and receiving instant feedback - factors which I believe are extremely important for improving their learning and motivation.

A child’s education is vitally important; it gives them opportunities and choices which enable them to live their life to the full and realise their unlimited potential.
