About this centre

The centre opened in 2012.

Kumon is suitable for all ages and abilities, and students currently attending the centre range from five to 15 years old. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

There are three assistants at the centre, all of whom are either studying A-Level maths or English at the college.

Through daily study, both at the study centre and independently at home, Kumon goes further than traditional methods of tuition by ensuring students maintain a level of development every day.

Weekday classes are held in a standard classroom in the main college building, while the Saturday class is held in a classroom in the sports centre (SB2).

Hi, my name is Ruth and I am the Kumon Instructor for the Rotherham Study Centre. I joined Kumon in 2012 after working for ten years as a planning solicitor at Rotherham and Doncaster Councils. I have a degree in languages (French and German) and post-graduate qualifications in Political Sociology and Law. I am a qualified secondary school teacher, and I spent some years in the 1990s teaching A-levels (Law, Politics and Sociology) in a sixth form college in London.

I came across the Kumon programmes after taking early retirement. I decided to become an Instructor because it would give me the opportunity to work with children of all ages in two of the most important subjects in the school curriculum – English and maths.

Another very important factor for me was Kumon's emphasis on developing a child's independent learning skills. I have always believed strongly in the power of self-learning; that any individual can fulfil their potential if they have the right attitude and the right study skills. I have now seen the way that Kumon builds confidence and improves concentration, even in the very young.

For me, helping to develop independent learners is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a Kumon Instructor.
