About this centre

The Kumon Wickford Centre opened in September 2006.

Students are of all ages and abilities; at present, the youngest students are four years old and the oldest are about 16. Ability levels of the students range from very high to those who initially struggled with maths and English. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

A dedicated team of staff help in the running of the centre, making sure that students achieve their goals on every visit. Early learners and newly enrolled students receive guided self-study from a member of the team, in both written and oral work.

Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider; rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who are ultimately able to face unfamiliar work with confidence, as well as challenges in the wider world.

Hi, my name is Jo Cooper and I have been a Kumon Instructor since 2013. I discovered Kumon with my son initially and was surprised by the difference it made, first in his concentration and confidence in class, then in his academic ability. Over time, the daily study habit was very helpful, it promoted a strong work ethic and a willingness to try to solve problems independently. It opened up new educational opportunities.

I love being a Kumon Instructor because the programme can be tailored to make any child smarter. We can work together to develop the specific skills needed to help the child progress. We can all see the improvements the child makes as, for example, they learn to complete the workbooks more efficiently, or accurately. Kumon is not easy, it takes commitment and some days will be harder than others, but it is a very effective way to learn at a pace that suits each individual child.

I am very proud of my team of caring and experienced assistants who work closely with me and have excellent rapport with the students. I keep a close eye on each student’s progress, and provide feedback both to students and parents.
