The Ashford South study centre has nurtured hundreds of local children along their Kumon journey; the journey to independent, self-confident learning.
Children from any age can benefit from Kumon’s unique maths and English programmes; students at the centre currently range from four to 15 years old.
Whether your child is struggling with their school work and suffers from a lack of confidence, or is ahead of their peers and needs further challenge, we can provide the individual programme to support them.
We foster a calm, focussed environment where each student can work independently to complete their work, supported by the Instructor and her assistants. The centre also has a range of books from the Kumon Recommended Reading List and number board challenges to complement their worksheet study.
Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.
Hello, my name is Liz Spencer and I’m the Instructor at the Kumon Ashford South Study Centre.
After 30 years focussing on my work as a management consultant and trainer travelling throughout Europe and the UK, I settled in East Kent and became a Kumon Instructor. Throughout my professional life I have always loved the elements of my work that involved training, coaching and nurturing individuals and teams to achieve their objectives. I have now transferred these skills to developing the potential of individual children at my centre.
I have a degree and MBA myself and I firmly believe that we never stop learning. I regularly attend training to improve how I instruct the programmes, how I plan the work individually for each child and how I can make sure the centre runs smoothly.
Communication is really important and I regularly discuss progress with both children and parents: Kumon is about teamwork between the child, the parent and the Instructor so that together we can create the environment that enables each child to reach his or her full potential.
My team of assistants and I look forward to welcoming you and your child to the Ashford South study centre; for more information please do not hesitate to give me a call.

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.
As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
