Welcome to the Kumon Blackheath Study Centre.

The Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes are designed to bring out the best in every child, regardless of age or ability. They help students reach their full potential and develop a lifelong love of learning. We support learners of all ages and abilities.

Kumon’s unique approach is based on individualised, advanced study. Rather than following the school curriculum or offering traditional tuition, work is set according to each child’s current ability, irrespective of age or school year. This ensures that students can strengthen any gaps in their learning foundations while also having the opportunity to progress beyond their school grade level when they are ready.

Each student begins with a free assessment to determine the appropriate starting point within the programmes. From there, they follow a personalised study plan, attending the centre up to twice a week and completing daily worksheets at home. Through carefully structured example questions and Instructor guidance, children learn to solve problems independently, building confidence step by step.

Regular daily practice in small, manageable increments enables students to develop not only strong maths and English skills but also valuable transferable skills such as concentration, stamina, perseverance, self-discipline, and independent learning.

By encouraging students to take ownership of their progress rather than relying on direct teaching, Kumon nurtures confident, self-reliant learners who feel equipped to tackle unfamiliar work and succeed across all subjects.

About your Instructor

My name is Valentina Tocco, and I bring a strong academic foundation and a genuine passion for education to my role as a Kumon Instructor. I received a classical education, studying Latin, philosophy, maths, and physics, and later completed a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Management.

I chose to become a Kumon Instructor because I deeply value the Kumon philosophy of learning. I strongly believe in its emphasis on nurturing independent, confident learners through carefully structured, incremental study. Supporting children in their academic and personal growth has always been central to my professional journey, and I find immense fulfilment in watching students develop into capable, self-assured individuals.

My Kumon journey began in 2014, when I opened the Kumon Cambridge West Study Centre. Since then, I have had the privilege of guiding and supporting many students and families within the local community. Today, I continue this journey in London, where I remain committed to providing the same high standards of guidance, care, and personalised learning.

I have also witnessed the effectiveness of the Kumon Method first-hand through my own children. Through their dedication and consistent effort, they developed confidence, independence, and strong academic ability, which ultimately led them to pursue university studies in Physics and Information Technology.

Both my personal and professional experiences strengthen my commitment to helping every child realise their full potential and develop the skills, resilience, and mindset required for long-term success.

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
