Gerry Stephenson

About this centre

The centre opened in 2011 and offers both Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes.

Kumon is suitable for all ages, from pre-school to sixth form. The unique Kumon Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

The Instructor, Gerry Stephenson, is supported by a range of mature and younger assistants, including graduates and sixth-formers. They help with the smooth running of the class, supporting students and working closely with the youngest children. Gerry and her team are committed to providing a rewarding, safe and focussed learning environment, in which students can develop their potential and establish independent study skills.

The centre is fully compliant with Child Welfare/ Health & Safety requirements and operates a signing in/out policy at reception. Parents are requested to remain on site.

My name is Gerry Stephenson and I would like to welcome you to the Bournemouth, Winton Study Centre.

I am a fully qualified teacher with a degree in Mathematics from University College London and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education with Distinction from Southampton University.

Before becoming an Instructor, I taught at a Bournemouth Junior School and then provided tutoring for the 11+, GCSE and A-level exams. With many years of experience, I am passionate about good education because it develops life-long skills leading to increased life opportunities.

The Kumon programmes have a proven track record of boosting confidence, increasing speed and accuracy and helping students of all levels achieve their academic goals, so I am naturally enthusiastic to endorse them.

Having attended a local Grammar School myself, I am especially aware of the intense competition for places in selective schools locally and know how Kumon develops the core skills necessary to have the best chance of success at 11+ and beyond.

If you would like to know more about Kumon and discuss how it could help your child’s education please feel free to call.

Most Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
