About our centre

The Kumon Corringham Study Centre supports children in Corringham and the surrounding areas. The centre is run by a qualified teacher, with over 15 years of classroom teaching experience, and her team of Classroom Assistants with the aim of helping children to grow in confidence and reach their full potential.

Children of all ages and abilities are welcome to start their Kumon journey at the Corringham centre. There is a designated area for supported work with our younger students, before they move up to the independent study area.

Study of the Kumon Maths and English Programmes help each child develop self-learning skills, enabling them to tackle challenging work without reliance on a teacher. At Kumon, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work. These skills will support children to easily grasp new topics in school and approach examinations such as the multiplication tests, SATs, GCSEs and their 11+ exam in the most effective and efficient ways. Our aim is to help any child of any ability to progress and develop a curiosity and love of learning.

About your Instructor

My name is Shahina Khan and I am the Instructor at the Kumon Corringham Study Centre. My passion for seeing children reach their potential was first sparked as I became a Learning Support Assistant with children with SEND. I went on to become a primary school teacher for 17 years and have also held the position of Head of Year for 6 years. The core of my teaching values are rooted in my desire to see children fulfil their full potential and become independent learners.

As a Kumon Instructor, I aim to develop children’s independent study skills, build their self-esteem and confidence. With my extensive background in teaching, and my dedicated team, we can help fulfil your child’s potential. Kumon’s individualised maths and English programmes will cater to your child’s needs and accelerate their learning. I place great importance in building a partnership with parents/carers and to work as a team to ensure every child succeeds.

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum.
