Opening a Kumon centre has been the best decision I have ever made

Ruth Mayes had been a teacher in primary in London for many years but recently decided on a lifestyle change. She wanted to move out of London to a more rural setting and used this as an opportunity to rethink her career. This decision become a reality when earlier this summer, she opened her very own Kumon centre in central Holmfirth, Huddersfield.

We caught up with Ruth to find out what first attracted her to Kumon, and how she is enjoying working with her students and growing her business.

Ruth, said: "I was looking to start something new. I loved teaching but no longer wanted to work the hours I had been doing for the previous 23 years. I also wanted some flexibility which would allow me more time to spend with my daughter.

"As a Kumon parent, I'd seen first-hand, the positive impact the study programmes have on a child's learning; I'd watched my daughter grow in mathematical ability and confidence on the programmes, as well a friend's children develop incredible can-do attitudes. I decided to explore the idea of becoming a Kumon Instructor!

"I looked at the information regarding franchise opportunities on the Kumon website and what this would involve. I was convinced. This is what I wanted to do. It would enable me to continue working in education whilst regaining a work/life balance and challenging myself to run my own business."

Ruth decided in March 2017 to pursue an opportunity in Holmfirth and went from initial discussions to Instructor of her very own commercial centre in just over three months, opening her doors at the beginning of July.

"It has been an exciting challenge starting my own study centre. I have been on a sharp learning curve but I am enjoying every minute of it. I opened with no students but I am making steady progress. It was a massive moment when the signage went up; it was the realisation that all the hard work fitting out the venue had paid off. Now, when I walk towards the centre in the mornings I feel an immense sense of pride that this is my new venture.

"I am seeing the children growing in confidence from session to session. The change in the students' study skills and the way they approach their work is very rewarding. And the smiles on their faces when they complete their worksheets more and more confidently. The excitement and pride the children display when they reflect on what they could do and what they have just done is fantastic.
