Why my students inspire me

Claire Papazidis, Instructor at Kumon Greenwich Study Centre
"I love to hear stories, from the parents and the students, of how far they have progressed thanks to Kumon."

Claire Papazidis opened the Kumon Greenwich Study Centre in February 2010. She was looking for something which matched her skills and enthusiasm for working with children and young people and knew Kumon was the right fit.

Claire began her working career as a self-employed maths and English tutor, and over the next five year's watched her business grow through word-of-mouth recommendations.

However, a love for numbers took her career in a different direction and, as a qualified accountant (CIMA), she began working in the investment banking sector.

After taking some time out to start a family, Claire never lost sight of her passion for education and so Claire's career took yet another turn when she opened the study centre. Now, with six and a half years under her belt, we caught up with Claire to find out why she loves being a Kumon Instructor.

Claire said: "Most of all I love to hear stories, from the parents and the students, of how far they have progressed thanks to Kumon; perhaps they have received an award at school or moved up a set in class. Being able to observe my students at the various stages of their Kumon journey, watching them improve and then go on to exceed their expectations, is really inspiring.

"Occasionally, I see students who have real difficulty settling into a study routine or problems maintaining concentration for extended periods of time. But, over time, through perseverance and careful guidance they begin to develop these vital study skills and go on to achieve amazing results. I really believe that every child can reach their potential through a little encouragement and positive feedback.

"I love the diverse mix of families that give my centre its identity. My families speak a range of languages and I particularly enjoy using my experience teaching English as a foreign language to thoroughly support these multilingual students in their learning.

"The centre is a real microcosm of the surrounding community, and I delight in playing my part within it. It is a hive of buzzing little minds and local families, all brought together by a shared desire to give their child a great start in life.

"My aim for the study centre over the coming years is for it to continue to be a thriving little community with children's study at its heart. And, I hope to maintain and build upon its reputation for offering high-quality instruction in a friendly, flourishing environment."
