The Kumon Garston Study Centre was opened in summer 2017.
Our aim here at the Garston Study Centre is for each and every child to become an independent, advanced learner, with a positive attitude to study.
The Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes offer what traditional tuition gives to your child and more. Kumon goes one step further by helping each child develop self-learning skills, enabling them to tackle challenging work without reliance on a teacher. Our aim is to help any child of any ability to progress and develop a curiosity and love for learning.
Your local Instructor will set work for your child at just the right level, enabling them to build confidence in their abilities and progress their maths and English skills in small, manageable steps through daily study. They will visit their local study centre twice a week for sessions with their Instructor. This allows the Instructor to tailor and adapt each child’s study plan to their abilities, through observing their progress and fluency at each level. Our study programmes are individualised to each child to help them establish strong learning foundations and a positive learning experience, to build skills and confidence for their future.
Hello, I'm Mary Phung-Wells and I am the Instructor at the Garston Study Centre. After 12 years of teaching physics in a secondary school, an opportunity arose to start up a new Kumon study centre not far from home. I have always loved working in education and Kumon allowed me to continue that with the focus on developing children as self-learners, at a pace and level that suits them.
My own children are studying the Kumon programmes and they will start secondary school with an advanced level of English and maths which will enable them to excel in all subject areas. They will enjoy school and have more time for extra curricular pursuits because the academic requirements will be met without difficulty. Working things out for themselves will be second nature, and as a parent I know that they will be equipped with the tools needed to be a success at whatever they one day choose to be.
What I believe is most powerful about the Kumon Method of Learning is that it is designed to ensure that children become life-long self-learners, able to deal with the challenges that school and work life will bring so that nothing is ever perceived as impossible or too difficult.

Study takes around 30 minutes per subject a day, depending on age and level of the work. At the moment, study is at home but classes will be open for study again as soon as it is safe to do so.

Most Popular Questions
Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.
As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
