About this centre
Are you looking for a maths or English tutor? Does your child need support, or do they need an extra challenge? The Kumon programmes are unique in developing children of all ages in ability to become independent and confident learners.
The centre welcomes students of all abilities and ages. The age range of students currently studying the maths and/or English programmes at the centre is from three to 16 years old. At the centre, the students enjoy a safe, welcoming and calm atmosphere aimed to help them develop excellent study habits and become independent learners who aspire to achieve their potential and aim higher.
The dedicated and passionate team at the centre consists of the Instructor, Samar, and five skilled assistants. The team provides friendly and professional support to all students and parents to ensure that every family receives the best assistance and guidance appropriate to their needs. Younger learners benefit from one to one support from a member of the team.
We give a lot of importance to updating parents/carers regularly about their child’s progress either personally or via telephone calls, texts or emails.

Hello, my name is Samar El-Koussa and I am the Instructor at the Hazel Grove Study Centre. I have an MSc in biology, I am a qualified secondary school science teacher, and I have a wide range of experience in teaching. Before opening the Hazel Grove Study Centre, I worked in England and abroad delivering French, science and maths tuition to both primary and secondary school-age children. I am very passionate about learning and education and nothing can be more rewarding than a proud smile on the face of child who just learned something new or achieved a higher level in their studies.
I started my journey with Kumon in 2015 after a friend told me about the amazing progress her children had made from studying the programmes. When I looked deeper into the maths and English programmes and the Kumon Method, I was convinced that Kumon was the route for me.
My aspiration at Kumon Hazel Grove is to provide a maths and English study centre that responds to the needs of the families in the area. Since I have been running this centre, I have seen first-hand the enormous positive effect that studying with the Kumon Method has on the academic progress and soft skill development of students.

Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.
As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
