Welcome to the Leicester, Syston study centre.

Since opening in 2011, the Leicester, Syston study centre has nurtured many students aged three to 16, to help them develop the necessary skills to tackle work beyond their school level. We have seen children who lacked in confidence come running into class eager to show off their latest achievement certificates from school.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

At Kumon, we realise that each child is different and learn in different ways. The free assessment we carry out provides a starting point appropriate to your child’s current level of ability and identifies any areas needing development. A study plan is then drawn up and, as your child moves through the programme; their progress is continuously monitored, with the aim of reaching an advanced level.

Students complete daily worksheets and visit the centre once or twice a week. When in class, your child’s study skills are observed and developed in line with the Kumon Method of Learning.

Similar to other tuition providers the Kumon programmes focus on essential academic skills, but we go one step further by developing a child’s independent study skills, needed for school, university, employment and all other aspects of adult life.

Hello, my name is Rina Patel and I am the Kumon Instructor for the Leicester, Syston study centre. I have a degree in Biological Sciences and a master’s in Statistics. Prior to becoming a Kumon Instructor, I worked as a Research Scientist for over 10 years before taking a career break to spend more time with my children.

Like you, I care about my children's education a great deal and I have experienced first-hand how the Kumon programmes can help children excel. Both of my children are advanced Kumon students, with my son completing the Kumon English Programme at the age of 10. It instilled in them a desire to do better and the will to work independently to achieve their goals.

I also experienced the reward of seeing them make dramatic progress, not just academically but also in taking responsibility for their own learning, so that I can step back and trust that they will complete school homework and prepare well for exams – this is why I am so passionate about the Kumon approach.

I take pride in providing a tailor-made programme as unique as each child. It is very rewarding to see children progress through their Kumon journey and unleash their full potential with confidence.

I will be on hand to welcome all new parents and their children to make sure you are comfortable with what happens at the centre. All students see me before leaving the class and I review progress towards their learning goals.

Most Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
