The Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes aim to bring out the best in every child, regardless of age or ability, and help them to reach their potential and foster a love of learning. Through individualised programmes with work set at just the right level, your child will be able to build strong learning foundations, not only developing ability in maths and English but transferable skills that will help them achieve across all subjects.

Children learn through example questions in our worksheets along with Instructor guidance. This method of learning offers so much more than traditional tuition: it nurtures your child’s independence, developing strong self-learning skills to give them the tools to help them excel in the future. Because Kumon does not follow the school curriculum and work is set according to ability, irrespective of age, our programmes allow learners both to fill in any missing gaps in their study foundations as well as the opportunity to work ahead of their school grade level. Your local Instructor will assess your child to determine at what point in the programme they should begin their Kumon study, then through daily work coupled with twice weekly study centre visits, they will build both self-confidence and crucial skills in small manageable steps.

Hi, my name is Lucy Thorrington and I have been the Instructor at the Kumon Lowton Study Centre for the last four years. I also work in Warrington Borough as a Primary School Teacher.

Working in education is my passion and although my teaching and instructing roles differ, helping children reach their full potential and develop confidence in their own abilities will always be my favourite part of my job. I am now a mum to Lyla and Lennon, and as a parent, I am keen to provide them with opportunities that will help develop their skills, not only in the classroom but in all areas of their lives.

I was a Kumon student myself. I initially enrolled onto the Kumon Maths Programme due to a lack of confidence in the subject when I started high school. Not only did Kumon study help me thrive academically, but it also boosted my confidence and equipped me with the tools needed to support other children.

Kumon does not provide tuition in the traditional sense. Rather than teaching our students, we place great importance on self-learning and encourage them to learn as individuals, helping them develop independent learning strategies to successfully complete new, unfamiliar work. Kumon’s individualised programmes enable students to progress at their own pace, so they are able to realise their unlimited potential and achieve success. With guidance and support, Kumon students acquire study skills such as speed, accuracy, time management, concentration and problem-solving.

Most Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
