The Kumon Peckham Study Centre has been providing supplementary education in maths and English since 2008. The class is based in a large hall on Bushey Hill Road, easily accessible from both Peckham and Camberwell.

Like other tuition centres, the Kumon programmes focus on academic success however, from the very first class we also aim to improve concentration, stamina, independence and good study skills; essential skills that are transferable into other aspects of the student’s life.

Kumon caters for all ages and abilities and the students at our centre range from three years old to teenagers. Many have been attending the centre for several years and are comfortably working at advanced levels beyond their school grade.

Students complete individually set work and are given homework on days they do not attend class. Most children spend approximately 30 to 40 minutes in class, per subject, although this will vary depending on the child’s age and ability. The class is a calm, focused environment where independence and concentration is encouraged in all students. Working alongside the Instructor are highly-trained assistants who guide and encourage students as they study.

Hello, my name is Bella Wimalasena and I am the Instructor at the Kumon Peckham Study Centre. I opened my study centre in 2008 and it very quickly became a popular choice for parents in the area looking for extra tuition for their children.

I have enjoyed watching children of all levels improve and exceed expectations. I believe the unique design of the Kumon programmes together with positive feedback and encouragement, can help any student to reach their full potential, and I am committed to ensuring that every child in my study centre does well.

Being a parent myself, I have seen first-hand how the Kumon programme has helped my own children, not only with their academic achievements but also to improve their speed, concentration and study skills.

The most rewarding aspects of my work is when I hear children tell me how well they are doing in school, an award they have received or that they have moved up a set in class. To see their confidence soar is a joy.

I look forward to welcoming your child to my centre.

Most Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme but each student receives regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
