About this centre
The Kumon Scarborough Study Centre is based just off Scalby Road at Wreyfield Church on Wreyfield Drive, Scarborough. The Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes pursue the potential of each child, developing their ability, confidence and nurturing their independence.
I welcome students of all ages and abilities from Scarborough and surrounding areas. Students attend the centre, or on-line for approximately 30 minutes per subject once or twice a week, and class day and study slot will be arranged at your initial assessment meeting.
The centre fosters a positive, encouraging atmosphere and focuses on developing excellent study skills as an integral part of the Kumon programmes. As the Instructor (and a former primary school teacher), I have many years of experience of working with both young children and students studying the higher levels of the maths and English programmes.
Through daily study, both at the centre and independently at home, Kumon goes further than traditional methods of tuition by ensuring students maintain a level of development every day.
Following a free assessment, your child will begin on the programmes at an individually set starting point, laying a solid foundation for effective learning. Their progress through the programmes will be tailored to their individual needs, ensuring your child continues to grow and achieve.
Hello, my name is Derek Elliott and I am the Instructor at the Scarborough study centre based at Wreyfield Church Hall on Wreyfield Drive.
When my career in the Building Society sector became increasingly sales focused, I decided to become a teacher and completed a primary teaching qualification at the University of Hull with a specialism in Information and Communications technology.
I initially came across Kumon in my first year of teaching when I asked a pupil who had an extremely quick and accurate recall of multiplication tables why their skills were so impressive. They explained they were a Kumon student which didn’t mean very much to me at the time. However, in my teaching career, those Kumon students I have encountered have consistently shown great mental agility and independence.
I decided to become an Instructor having seen how Kumon had helped both my own children and other children I have taught become successful and confident learners.
I have only ever taught one student at school who was quicker than myself at recalling 50 multiplication facts – and I’m sure by now, you will not be surprised to hear they were a Kumon student!
We currently have students of all ages - from Reception through to the end of secondary school drawn from many schools across the local area.

Most Popular Questions
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.
As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
