The Kumon Smethwick Study Centre has been running since 2011. During this time, the centre has helped hundreds of students unlock their potential on our Maths and English programmes.

Kumon is a Maths and English study programme for children of all ages and abilities; currently students at the centre range in age from three to 17 years old. The unique study method of Kumon enables children to work independently, giving them confidence in their abilities. They progress through small steps to gradually develop ability and speed before moving on to the next stage.

Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies. After an initial assessment, your child will follow an individualised study programme with work set at just the right level. They complete daily worksheets building skills and fluency in small manageable steps.

Our passion is to develop each student and strive to provide an excellent customer service to anyone who enquires at our centre. The classes are designed to be conducive to learning and our priority is developing your child.

About the Instructor

Smethwick - Grace Demanya

Hello, my name is Grace Demanya and I am the Instructor at the Kumon Smethwick Study Centre.

My journey with Kumon began when my children started their primary education. As I walked down the high street after school towards the library, I noticed parents and children with distinctive blue bags entering or leaving a centre.

Curiosity led me inside one day and that visit resulted in an appointment to discover more about Kumon, eventually leading to my children's enrolment.

It didn't take long to observe the positive changes. It was remarkable to see their advancement in Maths and English, coupled with a growing confidence in their academic pursuits which translated into their everyday lives.

My dedication to education and my drive to see children excel academically and in life fuel my belief in the Kumon method. I am convinced that it can cultivate the skills necessary for children to become independent learners.

I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to work with your children at the centre and to assist them in building their confidence through the Kumon programme.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
