"Kumon has helped me to concentrate so that I can now complete work in the time required. That’s helped me in many ways to perform well in my school subjects, plus I can now quickly answer difficult questions with confidence.”

Since eight-year-old Mahisha joined the Kumon Middlesbrough Central Study Centre her maths and English abilities have really improved, and she has flourished in many other aspects of her life. She is lucky enough to enjoy a full extracurricular schedule with ballet, gymnastics, football, judo and swimming all featuring in the things she currently loves to do. As well as attending language and cultural dance lessons in her weekly line-up, Mahisha also makes time to study her Kumon daily. Her mum says that not only has this improved her abilities at school, it has also helped her with key life skills.

We caught up with Mahisha and her mum, Nisha, to find out more:

Mahisha said; "Kumon has helped me to concentrate so that I can now complete work in the time required. That’s helped me in many ways to perform well in my school subjects, plus I can now quickly answer difficult questions with confidence.”

Nisha was keen to send Mahisha to Kumon as her sister’s children also studied the programmes, and this is where she witnessed the positive effects of Kumon study first-hand. Reflecting on Mahisha’s progress and commitment, she said, “Mahisha has learnt the importance of time management and is committed to following her routine with Kumon. Even with all her other activities, she is still enthusiastic to complete her Kumon before bedtime. At school, her teachers are proud of her work and they often tell me that Mahisha is very committed and focussed on her studies. As a mum, I couldn’t be prouder.”

She is currently studying Kumon level D1 in English and is learning how to apply complex sentence analysis from paragraphs and review vocabulary confidently. In Maths, Mahisha is studying level D, she is learning long multiplication, long division and the reduction of fractions and consistently works above her equivalent school grade level.

Along with her mum, her Kumon Instructor, Denise Keegan has had a big part to play in her progress and provides great support.

Denise said, “Mahisha has worked really hard to develop good concentration and focus when completing her work. She listens to all advice and instruction given and strives to bring this into her work. Mahisha is very good at explaining where she is up to and what might be causing her any difficulty. We then pause, and once we have agreed her understanding is correct, she continues with her work and proceeds to solve the issue herself. Her confidence continues to grow.”

Similarly, Mahisha is fond of and full of praise for her Instructor;

“Denise is very helpful, and she encourages me to focus and concentrate on my work if I get distracted by other things happening around me. She always gives me the correct advice that helps me to achieve my levels. I would like to become a teacher when I’m older.”

Keep up the great work Mahisha!
