Established in 2021, the Kumon West Norwood Study Centre provide individualised, worksheet-based maths and English study programmes for children of all ages and abilities.

Like other supplementary education providers, the Kumon programmes focus on academic success. However, from the very first class, we also aim to improve concentration, stamina, independence and teach good study habits; essential skills that are transferable into other aspects of the student’s life.

The students studying at our centre range from three years old to eighteen year olds, covering from pre-school to A-levels. Many have been attending the centre for over a year now and are comfortably working at advanced levels beyond their school grade.

Students complete individually set work at their ‘just-right’ level and are given homework for days they do not attend class. Most children spend approximately 30 to 40 minutes in class per subject, although this will vary depending on the child’s age and ability. The centre is a calm, focused environment where independence and concentration is encouraged in all students. There are highly trained assistants working alongside the Instructor, who closely monitor and guide students as they study.

About the Instructor

Hello, my name is Ahmed Farah and I have been a Kumon maths and English Instructor since 2021. I am passionate about helping students achieve their full potential.

I have been involved in education since 2014 and have taken on various roles, including working as a teacher. Kumon has allowed me to pursue a new challenge in an area I am passionate about – the education of young people.

Being a Kumon parent myself, I understand how the Kumon programme has helped my children – not only with their academic achievements, but also in improving their concentration, speed, resilience and – most importantly – their ability to self-study. It also gives me a parents' perspective on studying Kumon, which is invaluable in understanding and communicating with the parents at my centre.

Seeing students succeed is the most rewarding part of my job, especially watching students who start at the centre with low confidence go on to become independent, mature learners. I enjoy working with children of all ages and abilities and particularly like the fact that I can set each student's work individually so they can work at a pace that is best for them.

I am delighted to welcome you to my centre.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
