"I find schoolwork easier to understand and complete. My mental arithmetic has improved and I can do my sums in my head."
The Altrincham Study Centre runs on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:45PM-5:45PM with the latest entry for completing work in class being 5:15PM. Children are in the centre for up to 30 minutes per subject, during which there is a pleasant waiting area for parents and young children to use.
Students bring their completed daily homework, hand this in for recording and collect new work to take home. They complete their work for the day in class, which is then marked immediately and corrections are completed. They will also do supplementary work such as reading passages, mental arithmetic, and number boards. I use their record of work completed to monitor progress and set targets.
A number of motivational items are used such as stickers, certificates, prizes and medals. Feedback is given to students each week with praise, encouragement and guidance. I also regularly communicate the feedback with parents either by phone or email or briefly at class. Progress review meetings with parents are held twice a year as this allows parents to look at their child's progress over a period and discuss future plans and targets.
Homework and parental support
Daily work will have been set and is taken away by the student. This needs to be completed each day. Your support as their parent is needed to give encouragement and praise for work to be completed. Also you will need to mark their work so that they can then do any corrections needed. Don't worry – mark books are provided and marking is very straight forward and quick.
The students learn a great deal from re-working incorrect answers and then achieving 100% for the work done. Each student works through a programme individually tailored to their needs. These are designed not only to increase their mastery of the subject but also to bring about growing confidence, independence in learning, increased concentration and perseverance.
Enrolment
Enrolment includes giving you information, advice and guidance about the Kumon programmes and method and carrying out a diagnostic assessment with your child to establish the right starting point. This takes up to an hour and a half and is carried out in your own home.
