"Kumon study is the best thing I have ever done for my child Rohan. ...learning Kumon over the last 3 years Rohan has been able to think faster and has become more confident in general and progressed very well in maths."
Prachi, aged 15, higher level student
She is studying maths and currently on level J. She achieved a Silver Award in December and agreed to say a few words at the award ceremony to the parents and students about her experience of Kumon. Here is a summary of what she said in response to some of the questions put to her:
How long have you been doing Kumon?
I joined Kumon about six years ago when I was in year 4 and started off on level B maths.
How has Kumon helped with work at school?
It has helped me develop a firm foundation with maths and the daily repetition fixes the basics which means I make fewer mistakes as well as being fast. Although I didn't really see an improvement at first, over the long-term I can say that my level is higher than my peers. For example, if I was learning something new at school, I would have already done that with Kumon. So during class I would understand the work easily.
What motivates you?
The thing that motivates me is knowing that I'm going to be one step ahead of school. Also I find that Kumon goes deeper into the work than school does and I enjoy the challenge. Another thing is when I realise that I've just completed a hard section and I know I can do it. And finally, I love being able to do more than my dad!
What is your goal?
I'd like the Gold Award. I'm very nearly there. And probably just to continue to see how far I can go – what level I can reach - on the maths programme.
What do you find interesting?
The thing that I find interesting is learning different ways to do the harder topics. Also, I find the whole idea of self-learning quite good. I never thought that it would actually work but it does! By working things out for yourself, you're much more likely to remember it than when someone spoon feeds it to you.
Have you developed any other skills?
Through Kumon I've learnt to be independent and work things out for myself rather than relying on a teacher to tell me what to do. I've learnt to persevere, never give up and just keep going because in the end you'll be rewarded. Also, it has given me the confidence to take on a challenge and 'have a go' and not be worried about the outcome.
