"I find schoolwork easier to understand and complete. My mental arithmetic has improved and I can do my sums in my head."
The Andover Study Centre opened in January 2002 and we now welcome almost 100 students of all ages and abilities including adults. The majority of these students live locally and attend local schools but we also have several students who have moved away and still choose to study with the Andover Centre, by correspondence and through occasional visits to the class during school holidays.
The spacious building is large enough to cater for all students and the extensive car park and friendly waiting area with refreshments, reading materials and colouring activities for young children, make Kumon visits fun and relaxing for all concerned. Parents meet together; exchange information and experience and share the success of their children as they progress through their programmes.
Many of our students, currently ranging from four to 16 years, have been with the centre since it first opened, this has enabled them to reach, and stay, in the top sets at school and excel in all areas of their curriculum and in their various examinations. Andover Kumon Centre has become an essential part of the community as more and more families experience the positive effects of just a small amount of study, at exactly the right level, each day. We look forward to welcoming your children soon.
Class routine
At class the children swap over their homework and settle down to their classwork. When this is completed and while it is being marked, they do some verbal testing. They bring their corrected work to me, collect their stickers and go home. The time they are at class varies depending on how much work they are doing, but typically it is 20-30 minutes for one subject and 30-45 for two.
The role of the Assistants
I have three assistants who help the students in class and mark the work. I have one other assistant who marks and does verbal work and is on hand to guide new and younger students, listen to reading and check spellings.
What parents do
Parents drop their children off and wait for the children in the waiting area, which has reading matter and colouring materials to keep siblings entertained. Tea & coffee facilities are provided. There is ample car parking at the venue. Please check your child's box before leaving the centre to make sure they have their homework.
I ask new children to come to class a little earlier/later – around 3.30pm or 5pm when it is quieter, so we can help them settle in and become accustomed to class routine. It also enables me to have a word with the parent at the end of class to clarify what the student needs to do, or highlight any areas for special attention. I restrict parents access to the class and am not available to talk to parents during class, but am happy to be contacted at any time, by phone or email. Indeed I expect and appreciate regular contact with my Kumon families.
Twice a year we celebrate the student's achievements and hopefully motivate other students to aim high by providing students who have reached exceptional levels for their age with special bronze, silver and gold certificates. Students completing the whole program receive a framed graduation certificate, and other milestones are marked along the way.
