"I believe Kumon is the reason why my maths has improved, and without it I wouldn't have achieved an A in my GCSE maths and wouldn't have even attempted A-level!"
Welcome to the Beaconsfield Kumon maths and English study centre which opened in June 1999. The class is held at the United Reformed Church Hall which is opposite Zizzi's restaurant near the roundabout at the top of Aylesbury End leading to New Beaconsfield.
Students work in the main hall and there is a waiting room for parents and siblings (with toilet facilities). Car parking is available in the nearby White Hart public house (situated the same side as the Centre).
Kumon study encourages children to learn. Nurturing self-esteem and building confidence is the key to their success. We believe in the potential of every student and challenge them to become enthusiastic, independent learners who have a desire to succeed.
Basic skills training
• Regular daily study habits allow basic skills to become automatic and accurate.
• Little and often is the key to success. A little work, every day, with lots of practice built in.
• Daily marking of the work is important to ensure that work is always fully understood and corrected before it is put away.
Through Kumon study, students should develop:
• Confidence, self-belief, perseverance and the courage to face new challenges
• A good study habit
• The ability to work as an independent self learner
• The motivation to challenge themselves
Class routine
Children attend the centre for 20-40 minutes (dependent on whether dual subject) once or twice a week and follow their own individual programme. On arrival, students hand in their completed homework from the previous week to a team of well-trained dedicated assistants (most of whom are or were previously Kumon students) who take care of them in class.
Work completed in class may be an assessment or new work which the student may require extra assistance with. Whilst the student is completing their class work, their homework is being checked and recorded by the centre's team of assistants. When the student has completed their classwork they hand it in to be marked. Once the work has been marked, students must correct any mistakes made with help from an assistant, if necessary.
As a motivational tool we have a sticker system in place whereby students receive a sticker for each day's work completed. Once a milestone is reached, these can be exchanged for small prizes. Twice a year the students' achievements are recognized by Kumon where those students who have reached exceptional levels for their age are rewarded with special bronze, silver and gold certificates and medals. Students completing the whole programme receive a framed graduation certificate and other milestones are marked along the way.
