"Kumon study is the best thing I have ever done for my child Rohan. ...learning Kumon over the last 3 years Rohan has been able to think faster and has become more confident in general and progressed very well in maths."
Mrs Haldankar, mother of Rohan (aged 10), Whetstone study centre

About the centre

Class time is when I get to talk to the students about their progress and I give them the new work that is just right for their level of ability. Upon arrival your child will collect their class folder, which contains the day's class work, and will hand in their homework to be recorded. Your child will then complete their work in class, independently, before having it marked.

Children are tested on their reading skills or mental arithmetic before collecting their work. If necessary your child will have to make some corrections to the work just completed, before talking to me about their learning. Typically, your child will be in the centre for approximately 30 minutes, before leaving with enough homework to last them until the next class visit.

Class is run as a drop-in facility so that you can attend at any time to suit you between the open hours. I am well supported by Kumon trained assistants who help to guide the students through class.

I have compiled a few commonly asked questions to help answer any queries you might have.

Will my child start with work for his age/school year?
Not necessarily, at Kumon the programme is tailored to the ability of the individual and every student starts at what we call their Easy Start Point in order to develop their confidence and daily study habit.

How long will it take before my child is feeling more confident?
Kumon is a long-term study programme. Our aim is that with the combination of the Easy Start Point and intensive support early on that confidence should start to improve within weeks. However true long lasting confidence comes with studying new work from levels ahead of their school age independently. This takes time as we progress at the pace of the individual although I set goals for each student to be working ahead of their school age within the first 12 months in my class.

How long will my child be studying Kumon to get the full benefit?
I have both newly enrolled students and students who have been with me for up to 6 years at the centre. You should make a commitment that this will be long term study for your child not less than 2 years.

Will my child be at class for 2 hours?

No. The classes run on a drop-in bases. At Kumon we believe in a little and often approach so class time takes about half an hour and at home between 10 and 30 minutes depending on which subjects are studied.

Do I have to stay with my child?
There is a waiting area for parents, grandparents, child-minders and siblings. I expect that whoever brings the student is there when they are finished to take them home straight away.

Who works at the centre?
I am the Instructor and I am in charge. I have eight assistants currently who are all thoroughly trained by Kumon and myself.

Will my child be distracted if friends/schoolmates /siblings are also in class?
No. Each student works on their own and I simply do not allow distractions! It is a study centre not a social club.

How do we start?
Simply call me to book an appointment which is at a mutually convenient time away from class. We will meet at my home so that your child can take a diagnostic test/s and we can look in detail at the programme and set goals for your child. It takes around an hour. It is for both the student and parents to attend. Please do not bring other siblings as they tend to distract.

I hope that these FAQ's help but there may be many other questions that you might wish to ask. Please feel free to call me for a chat and to book your enrolment meeting.
