"Kumon is not always fun because it is challenging, but it is always successful provided parent, Instructor and student work in partnership."
Attending a Kumon class is very different to attending a traditional 'school style' class as each student is working on something different. Visits to the class are motivational and enjoyable for the student as they receive positive feedback from both the Instructor and the team of assistants.
New students will be welcomed by an assistant and will be guided through the class routine until it is familiar enough for them to become independent. Self-esteem increases as students take responsibility for their own learning, so all students organise their work in the classroom.
Completed homework is exchanged for new, with assistants recording results as the student completes class work. Whilst the days class work is being marked students take part in supplementary activities, such as arithmetic and times tables oral checking and number boards, to improve their number sense and dexterity.
Class work is supervised by the Instructor with guidance being given as required. Students correct any errors before seeing the Instructor for positive feedback on the days work, and their long term progress. When appropriate, feedback will also include information about upcoming work and the progress made over time, as well as setting short term and longer term goals for each student, involving them in their study progress.
Before students leave the centre they are awarded stickers for returning completed homework and completing the days class work. The reward sticker system is highly motivational as it encourages students to complete their work daily in exchange for gift vouchers.
Visits to class last approximately 20 - 30 minutes (per subject), during which parents are asked to wait in the leisure centre.
