"Kumon study is the best thing I have ever done for my child Rohan. ...learning Kumon over the last 3 years Rohan has been able to think faster and has become more confident in general and progressed very well in maths."
Mrs Haldankar, mother of Rohan (aged 10), Whetstone study centre

About the centre

At the Burton-on-Trent study centre, our aims are:

  • To welcome, encourage and motivate every child in their learning
  • To make class days positive and enjoyable experiences
  • To keep a calm and relaxed environment for the students to study in
At Class

Burton On Trent About the Centre Number BoardMost students come to class twice a week for 20-30 minutes per subject, whilst their parents wait in the adjacent room to the study area.

All new students are greeted by me or Liz and are guided through the class routine. On arrival they locate their individual study folder from the blue box for maths or red box for English.

They swap their completed homework for their classwork and new homework, and hand their folder to a marking assistant. Any student starting a new topic or doing an achievement test will see me first. English students complete their oral reading to an assistant before independently starting their written work after which they hand in their completed work for marking to the assistants.

Whilst work is being marked they complete the number board challenges and additional maths activities or read quietly in the library corner.

They check their marked work and do any necessary corrections making sure they have 100% before leaving class. Finally they collect their stickers and see me for motivational feedback and praise.

Work

All work is individually set by me to ensure it is the appropriate amount and the correct level for each student's ability. To gain the most benefit from the study programme every student should make sure that:

  • Work is completed on a daily basis
  • All work is accurately timed
  • All work is given to an adult for marking straight away
  • All corrections are completed straight away
  • Oral reading is supported by an adult and any suggested additional activities like learning multiplication tables are done regularly
Motivation

Burton On Trent About the Centre MedalsFor each piece of work completed, students are given a sticker for their sticker card. Completed cards can be swapped for prizes such as clocks, stationery and gift vouchers. As students progress and pass Achievement Tests, they receive certificates for each level mastered.

Students who make excellent progress relative to their age qualify for the ASR (Advanced Student Roll). Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates and medals are awarded to these students twice a year usually at an award ceremony held after class. This is a national award based on their level of achievement at the end of March and again in September each year.
