"I find schoolwork easier to understand and complete. My mental arithmetic has improved and I can do my sums in my head."
Kumon involves a 'little and often' approach. Students complete a manageable amount of work each day. All students start the programme at an easy starting point to build confidence and concentration. This also gives students the opportunity to fill any gaps they may have in their knowledge and skills.
How do I begin?
Initially, the student and their parents attend an enrolment meeting. This can take place at the parent's home or at the centre and lasts about an hour. At this point, I run through the Kumon programme to make sure parents and student are happy with what they have to do to enable their child to get the best possible experience out of their Kumon study. I set goals for the student to show their likely progress.
The meeting also involves a diagnostic test to establish the correct level for the student to start the Kumon programme. This is individualised, based upon ability and does not depend on their age.
The Kumon week
Students attend the centre once a week. They will be there for around 30 minutes. During this time they will do that day's Kumon. Depending on what subject they are studying, they will also do oral reading and completing the number board. We will see the students whilst they are in class, observe them working, discuss their progress and monitor time targets.
Motivation
Students receive stickers for their completed class work and homework. Students also receive certificates whenever they successfully complete a level of work.
If they are working on advanced material, known as the Advanced Student Roll (ASR), we award certificates to celebrate their progress in June and at the prize giving event in December.
Last December the Mayor of Cowes was there to present the students' medals and certificates. Have a look at the last ASR prize giving on the News and Events section.
The centre is a very positive environment for the students with a peaceful but productive atmosphere.
